The Return of Refinement

The term ”boutique hotel” has become synonymous with all and nothing – but the newly launched Stockholms Stadshotell – daringly named in Swedish and Swedish only – brings a rare and unusual hotel experience by reinstating independence, the singular vision that is what boutiques used to be about. Even though the name translates to a past Swedish phenomena of “city hotels”, true meeting places common to the 1960’s vibe in Sweden, this child of restaurateur Johan Agrell and colleagues is all about expanding on what personal choice and, yes, comfort can be about.

There is a a bistro, a dining hall, a bar. There is the decidedly unhindered and anti-neurotic cooking of Agrell and his kitchen. There is warm wood. And it’s all in a perfectly restored building nestling between once-again-cool postmodern 1990’s Södermalm architecture and the bustle of Medborgarplatsen, Stockholm’s beanie and vinyl epicenter.

A phone call from Johan Agrell kickstarted the relaunch of Småland. Like a chef seeking ingredients, Agrell found the vintage Småland chair to be perfect for the hotel bistro. And we can’t agree more – it’s not only perfect but once delivered to the bistro, we renamed it. The Småland chair became the Småland Bistro Chair in Stockholm. Solidly built in the country, refined enough for town.
